Jocks Story

You will be greatly missed Jock!

January 1st, 1993 - December 18th, 2007

Jock was a wonderful Clydesdale that we had purchased in 2005.  He was kind and gentle.  Everyone loved Jock.  Jock was scared of lying down and only lied down once in the years we had him.  The first year we got him Jock did lye down but he laid down on an incline in the pasture and could not get up.  So Jock has never to our knowledge since laid down.  He did fall down once last year at a parade coming out of the trailer and it took 5 guys, Gordon and I to get him up.  But we did and he finished the parade like nothing happened.   Such a trooper! Jocks life was cut short because on December 18th 2007 a Veterinarian named Dr. Richard A. Barr killed him.  He owns the Country Care Animal Complex, Inc. @ 4235 Elmview Road, Green Bay, WI.  54311. Phone #920-863-3220 and web: www.countrycareac.com

Jock was checked by our vet because he had an infections and it did not go away after a week on antibiotics.  Our vet came out December 7th, 2007 and did his checking and took some x-rays.  He said that Jock had an abscessed tooth and needed to have it taken out.  Our vet was not able to do this so that is why we went to Dr. Richard A. Barr.   Our first mistake! Our Vet called Country Care and set an appointment for Jock to get the tooth taken out.  We also called Country Care to get instructions on what we needed to do to prepare him for his tooth extraction.

On December 13th 2007 Gordon and our friend loaded Jock and took him to Green bay.  When they got there no one had any appointment set for Jock.  The secretary forgot to mark it down.  This was our 1st sign to run.  But Hind sight is always 20/20.  Country Care could work Jock in if they waited.  So they did and Dr. Barr took a look and tried to pull the tooth.  The tooth broke off and so Jock needed surgery.  Dr. Barr said he was too busy (Our 2nd reason to run) to do it that day but Gordon could leave Jock there if he had time Friday or Saturday he would work him in.  If not then he would do it Monday December 17th, 2007 and we could come pick Jock up after 5 p.m. on Monday.  Gordon told Dr. Barr that Jock is real hard to get up if he puts him on the ground.  Now Dr. Barr does have a tilt table and a crane so there was no worries right?! Wrong.

On December 17, 2007 @ 3:30 p.m. we get a call from Dr. Barr he is mad and said he cant get our ______ horse up and he has waisted all day trying to get him up.  Gordon went and got our friend and borrowed a trailer and went to help Jock. When they got there Jock was in a little room.  Jocks feet were touching the one wall and his back was against the other.  Jock was all sweated up and his tong was hanging out. There was a crain right up above Jock but there was no way to put the straps under him.  This should have been done before Dr. Barr put Jock on the ground.  Gordon and our friend tried to get Jock up, while Dr. Barr stood by with his arms crossed saying I tried that.   Gordon found out that Jock has been on the ground since 9:00 a.m. that morning.  When Dr. Barr was asked why he did not use the tilt table and he said it would take too long for the anesthesia to wear off after the surgery.   Soon Dr. Barr left and Gordon and and our friend were there trying to help Jock up by themselves.  At 6:30 Dr. Barr gave Jock a shot for pain and said he was closing. He would call us the next day.

I called @ 9:00 a.m. the next morning when they opened and asked how Jock was.  The secretary put me to Dr. Barr.  He did not say much except that Jock was in the same place they left him the night before.  He said that even though Gordon told him Jock was hard to get up that he did not think he was that hard.  I asked why he did not call sooner and we could have got some guys together and tried to get Jock up, not a bunch of 90 pound women (I know ladies this is not nice but lets face it men are stronger and can get a 2,000 pound horse up more than we can).  Dr. Barr did not like I said that. He did not however give me a reason why he waited 6 hours to call us about Jock or why he did not use the equipment for Jock  to make sure he got up.  So, Dr. Barr said that Jock was not going to get up and he suggested putting Jock down.  I said now I have to decide to kill my perfectly good horse because he could not get him up.  Dr. Barr said that is a bad way to put it.  Anyway, I said I would talk it over with my husband and call him back.

We called around to other vets and to our own and found out what Jocks chances would be now after 24 hours of laying on his one side and if he would ever get up.  All of them said that it was not good and he has a less than 5% chance.  And that he was probably paralyzed on the one side.  So, we decided it was best for Jock not to suffer any longer.  Jock died alone and on the ground with a crain above his head in the Country Care Animal Complex, Inc. in Green Bay WI. Under the care (if that is what you call it) of Dr. Richard A. Barr on December 18th, 2007.

Jock we miss you and we are sorry for what this man did to you.  You are now gone to a much better place and will never again have pain.  Gone but Jock will never be forgotten.  We love you Jock!

Im telling this story because Jock is not the only horse that has died under this Doctors care and I want to make sure this does not have to happen again to another animal.  Jocks death does not have to go unnoticed!  No other animal  or owners should have to go through this.
